Listen to Your Country #kidmin

I just got done watching the movie Invictus for the first time. And I must say, it was an amazing movie. Probably one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. It’s about the true story of Nelson Mandela using the game of rugby to unite the incredibly divided nation of South Africa in the mid-1990s. Before going any farther, watch the video above for a reference point.

As the South African rugby team enters the last 7 minutes of extra time, the score is all tied up. The team captain, François Pienaar (played by Matt Damon) calls his team into a huddle. The entire crowd of 63,000 South Africans breaks into a song of support for their team. And not only those 63,000, but millions of South Africans all over the country. In the huddle, François says to his team, “Do you hear? Listen to your country! Seven minutes. Seven minutes!”

I won’t ruin the end of the movie for you, but I will say that hearing the voices of their nation completely changes the way the South African team plays. Hearing the support of their entire nation transformed them.

If you didn’t know, I’m interning this summer with Kenny Conley and Cathy Harwick at Gateway Church in Austin, TX. As I’ve been hanging out with them and talking ministry, I’ve come to understand how truly important it is to have the voices of the entire church cheering on volunteers. It’s one thing to have the coach (kids’ pastor) and your teammates cheering you on. It’s something else entirely to have the voices of your entire church behind you! It’s vitally important for you, as the leader of the kids ministry, or any ministry for that matter, to communicate to your church how important it is for your church to encourage your volunteers and let them know how vitally important what they do is to the body! It’ll completely transform the way your team plays. Cheer them on!

Movies, Websites, WordPress, and Yancy. Links of the day.

I’ve started realizing there are a lot of sites that I come across that I find super cool. But I never tell you about them. So here are four awesome websites I’ve visited today that I think you should know about.

MagntizeMagntize- No, it’s not misspelled. But it is awesome. Magntize is a free service that allows you to set up a free personal online profile. Everything about you goes here–websites, pictures, and more. It’s a bit like an online business card.

Movieclips- This one’s rather self explanatory: they have movie clips. The sweet part is that they have movie clips from movies made in this decade unlike a lot of other sites. Finally, a place to show your friends the movie clip you keep quoting. Every 5 seconds.

Standard Theme- Standard Theme is the theme that’s been powering this blog for about the last month. (I was a beta tester.) I must tell you, it is the most powerful, flexible theme I have ever used. Period. And it just launched today.

Yancy Devotional- Preteen music sensation and all around awesome person Yancy launched the companion devotional to her “Rock-N-Happy Heart” CD today. I think you need to check it out.

The Kitchen is here!

OK guys, those of you whole follow my blog know that I don’t use this blog to pitch products very often. I’m making an exception for this one because it is so exciting. And just in full disclosure, in case you didn’t realize this already, I do work for KidzMatter, the company producing the product I’m about to discuss.

Today KidzMatter launched a all-new quarterly curriculum called The Kitchen. It’s just what you’d expect from KidzMatter and more: clean, easy-to-use, fun, entertaining, and a whole bunch of other adjectives I could throw at you but won’t for sake of length. :) It’s for kids’ ministries from 1st-6th grade for right now. It’s got some pretty sweet lessons, great videos, music, and a ton of other stuff.

I’m not just posting this here because I’ll score brownie points with my boss. (Though it does help!) I’ve been given the privilege of working behind the scenes the last few months with the curriculum author, Tina Houser, on getting this project in place. She’s a children’s ministry veteran and has so much to say. Her excitement for this curriculum is over the top. I know that she has poured weeks into just getting this one month ready for launch. She believes that this is something that people will use and love. Her excitement has me excited too! I hope you’ll check it out and download the sample lesson. I think you’ll agree with me that it’s awesome stuff. Check it out at kidzmatter.com/kitchen.
